THIJS PRINSEN
The Artistic Journey of Thijs Prinsen
Born in 1984, Thijs Prinsen graduated in 2007 with a degree in architecture from the Provinciale Hogeschool Limburg, where he specialized in visual arts. His thesis, a museum concept designed for sensory immersion, marked the beginning of his distinctive approach: a blend of spatial awareness and emotional experience. That same year, he was selected for the prestigious “Master’s Trial” guided by the Flemish Construction Master Marcel Smets.
Since then, Prinsen has made significant strides as an independent architect at Lens°ass Architects, becoming a partner in 2012. But it’s his foray into lighting design, especially through his collaboration with Serax, that’s drawn the attention of the design world. His aesthetic is rooted in architecture but softened by a tactile sense of material and form.
Serax Collaboration and Lighting Innovations
For Serax, Thijs Prinsen designed a unique series of wall lamps inspired by reclaimed architectural materials. Drawing from a palette of terracotta and pigmented concrete, he reinterprets the humble brick into sculptural lighting pieces. The result is the Primary Shape °1 wall lamp, Primary Shape °2 wall lamp, and Primary Shape °3 wall lamp, a trio of geometric forms that strike a balance between industrial grit and artistic subtlety.
These Thijs Prinsen wall lamps do more than illuminate a space, they create atmospheres, frame emotions, and reflect an architectural lineage. Categorized under lighting and wall lamps, each piece from the series embraces purity of form while sparking curiosity. It’s no surprise they’ve become staples in modern interiors seeking warmth through structure and artistry.
A Lasting Design Philosophy
Thijs Prinsen continues to design with the same philosophical precision that marked his early career. Whether in large-scale architectural projects or in lighting collaborations, he applies a rigorous yet poetic methodology. His work evokes a phenomenological relationship with space, where materials speak, and shapes narrate.
