Born in 1918 in Copenhagen, the Danish artist Bjorn Wiinblad worked first as an apprentice in a printing press, and after attending a technical school, from 1940 to 1943 he was accepted into the graphic program of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. After working for several years at the Danish company Nymolle Fajance Fabrik, in 1952 he opened his own studio in the city of Lyngby. In the years that distinguish his career, he deals with ceramics, scenography, painting, illustrations, glassware and tapestries and is recognizable by a style characterized by wavy lines, bright and lively colors, reflecting a design concept linked to aesthetics. He created several collections for Rosenthal and, from 1971 to 1982, he created a different Christmas plate every year. At the same time he also made illustrations for the books of fellow countryman Hans Christian Andersen. Wiinblad won the Cultural Award of the American-Scandinavian Foundation and died in 2006.
